Free indeed

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36 NIV

When we choose to become a Christian, we are exchanging our ‘old’ spiritual life for a ‘new’ spiritual life.  Our ‘old’ spiritual life has the rules and laws from the way we used to live when we listened to the world and to the devil. Our new spiritual life is filled with the rules and ways that God has given us to live by.  The way we were meant to be living life here on earth and with each other.

Once we learn about Jesus but before we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we become aware of our sin and how it has a great deal of power over us. We learn how the devil is hovering over us telling us what we need to do.  We tend to believe that we have to do what our sinful nature is telling us to do because that is what feels right according to the world. We may also feel as if there is no other way, so we believe the lies that the devil has whispered in our ears.  Lies like ‘you have gone too far for God to reach you’, ‘your sin is so big that God won’t forgive you’, ‘no one will ever love you because you are so screwed up’.

These are all lies that the devil tells us to try and keep power over us. However, as John 8:36 says, once Jesus sets us free, we are free. All of that power that the devil has over us is removed when we decide to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

All of our behaviors and thoughts do not change overnight but we are not bound to the devil any longer.  We know that we have a choice, that Jesus has given us a choice and we are not alone in the battle to keep ourselves free from that bondage.  We need to know though, that the devil is going to fight hard to keep us bound to him, but Jesus breaks every chain of power that the devil has over us, if we give everything over to Him.

As Christians, the citizens of God’s Kingdom, we are free to choose to listen to God, not the devil and we can choose to not give sin the power to control us as it did before we were Christians.  This freedom does not mean that we are free to do whatever we like, we are subject to the laws and rules God has put in place.

Below are some questions that you can answer. Again, I would love to hear your responses if you are willing to put them in the comments section. If you don’t want to leave them where others can read them, you can private message me on my Facebook page ‘For His Honor.’
